Is Eurotunnel worth it? Our honest verdict

Eurotunnel is faster and more reliable than the Dover–Calais ferry — that's not in dispute. The 35-minute tunnel crossing versus the 90-minute ferry crossing is a significant difference, especially with children or pets on board.

On price: for most UK families travelling to northern France, if you book at least 6 weeks ahead and avoid peak days, Le Shuttle and the ferry are within 10–15% of each other. Eurotunnel's per-vehicle pricing means groups of 4 or more often pay less per person than the ferry.

Where the ferry wins: solo travellers or couples on a tight budget, and anyone heading to Normandy, Brittany or south-west France (where a Portsmouth or Newhaven ferry departure saves driving through Paris).
